Byteboard
Build Journal β Project Byteboard (Custom Mechanical Keyboard)
April 25, 2025
Began planning for a fully custom mechanical keyboard inspired by Peng Zhihui's HelloWord
keyboard. My goal: to build a compact, modular, and aesthetic board tailored for both programming and creative work.
April 27, 2025
Analyzed existing open-source designs. Decided to go for a hot-swappable PCB with an OLED and encoder for enhanced UX.
May 1, 2025
Identified required components (switches, diodes, MCU, OLED, encoder, etc.). Created a tentative bill of materials (BOM) and sourcing list.
May 8, 2025
Prototyped the case in CAD software based on switch spacing and key layout. Designed it with aesthetic and ergonomic considerations, including support for a brass encoder knob.
May 18, 2025
Completed all KiCad validation. Gerbers and BOM are ready for manufacturing. Preparing to submit files to PCB fabrication and begin sourcing components.
Whatβs Next?
Seeking funding support to purchase components, order the PCB, and manufacture the case.
